The mental health needs of our students have never been more important. Often, faculty and staff are the first people to whom students display or disclose their symptoms. These encounters can be overwhelming especially when our desire to help is greater than our capacity to help. The need to keep things running smoothly for hundreds of other students in our offices and classrooms, unclear expectations from many directions, and our own mental health needs can make it difficult to feel at ease when confronted by a student in crisis. This series of workshops aims to help you cultivate the knowledge and skills to stand with our students-in-need when they are most vulnerable.
As a participant in these workshops, you can learn to identify the different ways our students' mental health can appear in correspondence and on-campus conduct. Armed with this information you can judge how best to respond to these students to keep them safe and keep you on track toward your goals for your classroom or office. Beyond that, you will have the opportunity to develop an understanding of the limits of your role as a member of staff or faculty, and when it is time to call in additional support. Finally, this workshop will impart specific strategies like useful syllabus language, model responses to common issues, and a framework through which you can be there for our students while avoiding being too burnt-out to be there for yourself.

According to the CDC, the number of reported LGBTQIA+ students in higher education increased from 11% in 2015 to 26% in 2021. Evidence from multiple measures supports that these students experience higher rates of metal health issues and food and housing insecurity. As such, supporting LGBTQIA+ student success can provide the foundation for retention and persistence rates among this population. This session will cover foundational information about LGBTQIA+ populations and best practices for creating inclusive instructional spaces. Those who do not have any prior training about this population, and those who have some foundational knowledge, including those who attended the Flex Day session on this topic, are both encouraged to join.

Have you heard about “Ungrading” in higher education and curious what is it? Ungrading has long been associated with the idea of purposefully eliminating or minimizing the use of points or letters to assess student work. The focus of ungrading is to provide extensive feedback to students and then jointly (students and instructors) come to a consensus as to what the grade should be (Blum, 2017; Stommel, 2017). Let’s talk about the benefits and barriers of this controversial practice. Please join us!
