What is priority registration?

Priority registration is designated specifically for students who enroll in GWC for the purpose of degree or certificate attainment, transfer to a four-year college or university, or career advancement. Students who have completed orientation and assessment, developed an education plan, declared a major, and maintained good academic standing will be granted higher priority for registration.

Students are notified of their registration dates by posting the date and time in the student’s MyGWC portal account. Specific dates and times are determined by: Student Type (Continuing, New, Returning, etc.), Educational Goal, Support Programs (DSPS, EOPS, Foster Youth, Veterans, CalWorks), Academic Standing, and completed course units (0-99).

To view Priority Registration Requirements Deadlines and Registration Appointments Assigned dates, you can go to our ACADEMIC CALENDAR page or the REGISTER page. (Under "When can I register?, then the term drop down.)

If you fulfill the Priority Registration requirements after the deadline, the Priority Registration appointment will be assigned the following semester.

How are priority registration appointments assigned?

Golden West College utilizes a priority registration system that is in compliance with California Education Title 5 Code of Regulations for Community Colleges and SB 1456. GWC has three levels of priority registration. In order to register in the first level priority registration group, students must meet ALL State mandated requirements for priority registration.

Registration Priority:

Coastline Community College District prioritizes registration based on academic progress and specific needs. Students are categorized into four levels with specific registration windows within each level.

Level 1:

  • Students (excluding concurrently enrolled high school students) who:
    • Meet good academic and/or progress standing requirements.
    • Have earned 100 or fewer degree-applicable units within the Coast District (Coastline, Golden West, and Orange Coast Colleges).

Level 2:

  • Students who meet Level 1 requirements EXCEPT:
    • Their counselor-approved Student Education Plan (SEP) doesn't specify a defined course of study leading to an Associate Degree, transfer, state-approved certificate, or career advancement.

Level 3:

  • All other students not meeting Level 1 or 2 requirements (excluding concurrently enrolled high school students).

Level 4:

  • Concurrently enrolled high school students.

Registration Order within Each Level:

  1. Veterans, Foster Youth, DSPS, EOPS, CalWorks, and student-parents with minor children.
  2. International Students.
  3. Students in specific college-designated athletics programs.
  4. Continuing Students with 99.9 or fewer units within the Coast District who enrolled in the previous fall or spring semester.
  5. New Students (never enrolled in Coast District classes).
  6. Returning Students (previously enrolled but missed two consecutive primary semesters).

Important Notes:

  • California Assembly Bill 2881 (AB 2881) recognizes student parents as students with children under 18 who rely on them for more than half of their financial support. If you meet this definition and are interested in taking advantage of priority registration, please submit the Priority Registration Request for Student Parents form.

  • To view Priority Registration Requirements Deadlines and Registration Appointments Assigned dates, you can go to our ACADEMIC CALENDAR page or the REGISTER page. (Under "When can I register?, then the term drop down.)

  • If you fulfill the Priority Registration requirements after the deadline, the Priority Registration appointment will be assigned the following semester.
