At Golden West College, we believe that financial barriers should never stand in the way of education.
Thanks to the support of generous donors, the GWC Foundation provides hundreds of scholarships each year to help students succeed and reach their goals. All actively enrolled students at Golden West College are eligible to apply.
Scholarships are awarded based upon a combination of financial need, academic achievement and community, campus or family contributions.
Academic Senate Scholarship
The Academic Senate of Golden West College established this scholarship in recognition of academic excellence.
Alpha Gamma Sigma Honor Society Scholarship
This scholarship recognizes the outstanding efforts and accomplishments of members of the Sigma Pi Chapter of Alpha Gamma Sigma California Community College Honor Society. In addition to maintaining a minimum grade point average of 3.0, recipients must demonstrate leadership and service to the Chapter, the campus, and the community.
Alumni, Seacliff on the Green and Weiser Lock Scholarship
This scholarship is a blend of the Alumni, Seacliff on the Green and Weiser Lock Scholarship. This scholarship was established for worthy students in support of higher education. This fund is an expression of gratitude by Golden West College to provide support for the next generation of students.
American Association of University Women (AAUW) - Westminster/Fountain Valley/Huntington Beach – Jane Berlinger Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established by the family of Jane Berlinger. Jane was a dedicated and caring elementary teacher. Working with her first graders gave her enormous satisfaction. She inspired students to do their best and take pride in their work. Her greatest joy was watching her 6-year-olds master reading and writing skills. For children struggling to learn to read Jane used a kinesthetic approach that helped them achieve success. In retirement Jane enjoyed her four grandchildren, traveling with her husband and playing bridge. Early on she found AAUW. She was committed to the AAUW Mission and wasted no time in getting involved. She served in many capacities including a branch president and made lasting friendships along the way.
American Association of University Women (AAUW) - Westminster/Fountain Valley/Huntington Beach - Shirley Pyle Memorial Scholarship
Shirley Pyle started her college education once her children were in school. She attended Long Beach City College and California State University, Long Beach, obtaining her Master’s Degree in Education. The next twenty-five years she spent in education as a teacher, an administrator, and a mentor. Shirley was a longtime member of the American Association of University Women - Westminster/Fountain Valley/Huntington Beach and the Golden West College Patrons. She was instrumental in establishing AAUW scholarships to assist student returning to college to complete their lifetime goals. She was also an active participant in reviewing scholarship applications, a job she loved to perform. The American Association of University Women/Westminster/Fountain Valley/Huntington Beach has established this scholarship to honor Shirley’s memory and to carry on her goal of providing scholarship funds for deserving students.
American Association of University Women (AAUW) - Westminster/Fountain Valley/Huntington Beach Scholarship
The purpose of the American Association of University Women is to further higher education among student and to promote education for all. This scholarship is for student who have returned to college with the intention of completing their education in a four-year institution and entering the teaching profession.
American Legion of Inglewood Veterans Scholarship
American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic Veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. Gino Wise, Commander of American Legion of Inglewood post 188, names Post Commander of the Sons of American Legion, Tom Graveline as Executor to distribute the money upon his passing. In June 2019, an endowed scholarship fund for Student Veterans through Golden West College Foundation was created to support the Veterans educational endeavors.
Aminoil and Dennis F. Roughton Memorial Science Scholarship
The Aminoil and Dennis F. Roughton Memorial Science Scholarship is awarded to a science student majoring in any of the physical or biological sciences. The awards comprising this scholarship were established to ensure and promote the continued growth and development of the sciences.
AMUSE 4 Autistic Students Scholarship
This scholarship was created by the Amuse Foundation.(Advocating, Maintaining, Unity with Special Humanly Needs and Everyone) This scholarship is dedicated to providing educational opportunities and mentorship to autistic individuals, with the goal of fostering inclusion, personal growth, and success.

Amuse 4 Glass Children Scholarship

Anita June Duncan established this scholarship to support students in the Golden West Nursing program.
Anniversary Scholarship
The Anniversary Scholarship was established in celebration of Golden West College’s 20th, 25th, and 40th anniversary. Faculty, staff, students, and individual community members have generously contributed to this scholarship. During the 25th and 40th anniversary the Hens & Chickens Quilt Fellowship, a campus auxiliary, created beautiful signature quilts. The proceeds from the sales of signatures for the anniversary quilts, as well as the handmade quilts donated yearly for raffle, help support the needs of students through this scholarship.
ASGWC Perpetual Scholarship
This perpetual award is funded by the Associated Students of GWC to assist deserving students with their educational goals.
Assistance League of Huntington Beach
The Assistance League of Huntington Beach is a chapter of the National Assistance League, a nonprofit organization. There are over 150 active and community service members in Huntington Beach who volunteer their time for the betterment of the community. The Assistance League is pleased to have this opportunity to offer economic help to Golden West College nursing students.
Augusta Barker Nursing Scholarship
This scholarship for nursing students was established in 1987 with a legacy from Mrs. Augusta Barker. During a period of serious illness, Mrs. Barker was cared for by GWC nursing students. She was impressed with the caring and skill of the students, and her legacy is a tribute to the quality of the Golden West College Nursing Program.

Axel Family Scholarship
Jane Axel, devoted artist and GWC student for many years, was awarded Artist of the Year for Huntington Beach in 2007. She has exhibited her work in many local galleries. Her sensitivity, originality, open- mindedness and free spirit were expressed in the execution of her work. Jane drew upon her extensive travels and life experiences for creative and innovative expression. During her long productive life, she never lost her love for the arts and others. This scholarship was established by her immediate family members, mentors and artist friends.
Bernard Gilpin Merit Scholarship for Physics
Bernard (Bernie) Gilpin was a dynamic instructor who delighted in sharing his love of physics through caring and laughter. The Bernie Gilpin Merit Scholarship for Physics honors a talented physics student who exemplifies diligence, good humor, and grace while working in this challenging field. Like Bernie, this student not only excels personally, but he or she helps others excel as well. This student helps fellow classmates see that physics is to be loved, not feared, and that it is a subject to be enjoyed for a lifetime.
Bonnie and Radford Robinson Memorial Scholarship
As an educator, Bonnie Robinson loved her profession. She dedicated her time and effort to improving the lives of the students who both loved and respected her. A warm hearted and decorated member of the Golden West College faculty, Bonnie knew no boundaries when she set her mind to accomplishing a goal, and she encouraged that exact approach in her students. This scholarship was dedicated in her loving memory by the late Radford Robinson, her husband of 45 years. It will continue her passion by providing students a chance to succeed.
Brunilda "Bruni" Cronk Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is dedicated to the memory of Brunilda L. Cronk by her family, friends, colleagues, students, and acquaintances. All who came in contact with her benefited. Although she was small physically, she was a giant in stature. Her greatest pleasure was in working with and helping students. On and off campus her smile and positive attitude carried others along with her. She was not only a teacher and a mentor, she was a friend. She taught through and by example, and she was considered the champion of the under-represented. Her memory will live on forever in the hearts of those she touched. We love you, Bruni.
C. Dean Hill International Scholarship
This scholarship was established in November 2019 by Mrs. Laurie Hill in the memory of her husband, Mr. C. Dean Hill. In recognition of the Hill family’s commitment to international education and cultural exchange, this scholarship supports international students pursuing higher education and achieving their academic goals.
C.A.R.E. Scholarship
This scholarship was established to recognize and support outstanding students in the C.A.R.E. Program. The C.A.R.E. (Cooperative Agencies Resources for Education) Program is designed to help single parents who are receiving public assistance achieve academic and personal success. C.A.R.E. students struggle to balance their family and educational responsibilities. They are faced with financial barriers which make it even harder for them to obtain their future goals. These students work extremely hard to overcome numerous obstacles so that they can create a better life for themselves and their families. This scholarship will help make their dreams of a higher education a reality.
California Community Colleges Scholarship Endowment - OSHER Scholarship
The OSHER Foundation established this endowment to support students who have demonstrated a commitment to completing their education and have certain financial hardships that make it difficult to pay for the cost of attending college.

Carolyn Taft Face Memorial Scholarship
Carolyn Face was a 38-year resident of Huntington Beach and the mother of retired GWC employee, Carolyn Kirkpatrick. She enjoyed attending college events and was a regular contributor to the GWC Symphonic Band as well as KOCE-TV. To honor Carolyn’s life, her family and friends established this scholarship to help students achieve their educational and life goals.
Chip Marchbank Recognition Award
In 1986, Chip Marchbank was recognized as the Community College Trainer of the Year. Chip chose to take the award funds and establish a scholarship to provide support and encouragement to students who are pursuing careers in athletic training.
Cora Mora Moreno Memorial Cosmetology Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Jim Moreno, Coast Community College District Trustee, and his sister, Marie Moreno Patino, in memory of their loving mother, Cora M. Moreno. Cora maintained an active
California beautician’s license for over 50 years and was dedicated to education and community service. Upon her death in March 2008, this scholarship was established to help cosmetology students who have achieved a strong academic record and have demonstrated a commitment to community service.
Cupadicot Award
The Cupadicot Award was established by the Associated Students of GWC. The criteria for the award is based on an essay describing "How I Survived at GWC."
Dan Wiseman Memorial Scholarship
The handball spirit was embodied in Dan Wiseman. A motto he adopted was "Live Longer, Play Handball," which he did until shortly before his life was taken from him by cancer. If that motto had read, "Live Better, Play Handball," that would have been very true in Dan’s case. Dan lived life with great enthusiasm. He was an exemplary family man who was involved in every aspect of family life. Of all of Dan’s enthusiasms, none brought him greater joy than handball. His friends from the University Athletic Club in Newport Beach, where he had been a member for a number of years, have honored him for the man he was and for his love of handball, with an endowed scholarship in his memory.
David F. Anthony Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is established to honor one of the founding members of the Golden West College Music Department, who played important roles in the establishment of Recording Arts, Commercial Music and Traditional Music programs and courses, and directed many musical theater productions.
Don & Doris Randol Memorial Scholarship
Don Randol, former Associate Dean of Admissions and Records at GWC, was dedicated to quality education and worked tirelessly on behalf of the students he served. He and his supportive wife, Doris, positively influenced many lives through their association with the Coast Community College District. Colleagues and friends established this scholarship in memory of Don and Doris Randol for their service to education.
Don Rowe Memorial Scholarship
As a charter faculty member, Don Rowe helped develop the first football and tennis programs at Golden West College. It was his desire that student athletes succeed and go on to complete their education at four- year colleges. When Don passed away in 2005, his family and friends established this memorial fund in his honor to continue his legacy of helping and encouraging young people
Doris Jean Zwick Memorial Scholarship
In 1941, when leaving high school, Doris Jean Zwick knew she loved office management and bookkeeping. She excelled in her entry level secretarial jobs, often “training” new hires on the accounting procedures they would need for a job she was already doing; she also saw the difference in salary on payroll. How often she said, even at the age of 95, “I wish I would have pursued accounting in college, but in that era, I was not encouraged to try.”
Dr. Americo Lopez-Rodriguez Scholarship
Dr. Americo Lopez-Rodriguez came to this country as an immigrant when he was 16 years old, not knowing a word of English, but like the immigrants before him, was willing to overcome this obstacle and many others. His mother always told him that nobody owed him anything, and that if he wanted something he had to work for it. He has always lived by this philosophy. He attended community college while working full- time and then transferred to UCSB, earning a B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. Dr. Lopez-Rodriguez retired in 2016 and is a part-time professor at Golden West College. Although he has worked hard for his personal advancement, he has always had the concurrent goal of helping other Chicana/o and Latina/o students to be successful. This scholarship was established for the purpose of assisting and improving the lives of Chicana/o-Latina/o students through educational assistance, cultural awareness, and active involvement in the Chicana/o-Latina/o community.
Dr. Fred J. Owens Memorial Scholarship
Dr. Owens was a charter faculty member of Golden West College and began his campus career as its first Athletic Director. He also served as Dean of Student Services and Vice President of Administrative Services. This scholarship was established upon his retirement by his colleagues, friends and former students in appreciation of his 30 years of service.
Dr. Kenneth D. Yglesias Scholarship
The 2003-2004 Student Council created the Dr. Kenneth D. Yglesias Scholarship to honor the contributions of GWC’s sixth president. The Dr. Kenneth D. Yglesias Scholarship is given to a Golden West College student who best demonstrates the qualities of scholarship, leadership and action. This prestigious scholarship recognizes a GWC student who exemplifies Dr. Yglesias’ belief of “Let change be the challenge.” This scholarship is an endowed scholarship supported by the Associated Students, faculty, staff, and the community.
Dr. Max Lechtman Nursing Student Memorial Scholarship
The Dr. Max Lechtman Nursing Student Memorial Scholarship was set up by a dear friend and fellow GWC teacher. Max was a very well respected and innovative professor of microbiology for over 20 years. He co-authored numerous editions of microbiology textbooks and lab manuals. After retirement, Max continued his passions for research, grant writing and creating alabaster sculptures. He also wrote and published a mystery novel, “A Sense of Rumor”.

Dr. William and Joan Stanley Memorial Scholarship
Dr. Stanley was a GWC Biology instructor for many years, whose wide-ranging accomplishments included hydroponics. His wife, Joan, also taught biology, was a medical technologist and earned her master's degree. Both valued the importance of higher education.
Ebell Club of Newport Beach Scholarship
The Ebell Club of Newport Beach is an affiliate group of the National General Federation of Women's Clubs, chartered by Congress in 1904 for philanthropic endeavors. The Newport Beach chapter has been assisting area organizations for 81 years. This scholarship provides funds to Golden West College nursing students.
Edith Marie Bell Strother Scholarship
Edith Marie Bell Strother was a well-known Seal Beach resident and an accomplished artist. The family of Mrs. Strother established this scholarship in her honor for art students.
Edward J. Mulder (HAIA) and Pop Mulder Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established by family and friends to honor the memory of Edward J. Mulder and his father, Pop Mulder. Ed Mulder, a 1951 alumnus of Orange Coast College, was a charter faculty member at Golden West College where he developed the Architectural Program. Pop Mulder was a volunteer at GWC who won the hearts of the entire campus. He was an avid supporter of campus athletics and was responsible for the completion of many grounds projects on campus. The Mulder family provides support and encouragement to students who are pursuing a career in architecture with this scholarship.
Emancipated Foster Youth Scholarship
Studies show that less than 2% of emancipated foster youth attend and graduate from a college or university. Robert and Kathy Smith set up this endowed scholarship to assist current or former foster youth attending Golden West College, so that they can succeed at attaining a higher education.
ENCORE: Students Preparing for 2nd Career Scholarship
The funding for this scholarship is provided by Dorothy Beatrice Duthie's family in gratitude for the financial aid and confidence extended to Dorothy when she was en route to a second career.

This scholarship honors all who have retired from the Golden West College English Department (Thomas Heaney*, Bonnie Robinson*, Mary Howland, *Ann Hostetler, *Lurene Noland (formerly Brooks), *Barbara Dilworth, Joanne Kashdan*, Martin Newitz, Mickey Jackson, *Diane Ewing, Anna Marie Thames, Kathryn Crown, Michael Goodman, Chuck Whitchurch, John Lundquist, Marie McGrath, *Stella Follin and *Valerie Davis). *Deceased
Ernie Moersch Memorial Scholarship
The athletic spirit was embodied in Ernie Moersch. Sports were an important part of his life. Ernie was orphaned at the age of two, and sports provided role models and stability. He began boxing at 12 years of age. He then went on to play football and baseball for the United States Marine Corps. One of his jobs in the military was to oversee the athletic department at El Toro Marine Base. In so doing, he gained the respect of and nurtured lifelong friendships with fellow athletes. In his 40’s, Ernie became the equipment manager for Golden West College. He loved working with the young athletes, and although he ran a “tight ship,” Ernie managed to endear himself to many. He had a special way of showing young athletes he cared and inspired them to reach their goals. Through this scholarship, Ernie’s love of sports and his athletic spirit will continue to support young athletes working to achieve their goals.
Extended Opportunity Program & Services (EOP&S) Scholarship
The classified staff in the EOP&S/C.A.R.E. program established this annual award to recognize the achievements of students who have overcome various obstacles to attend college.
Fred Fred Hoover Memorial Scholarship
Fred Hoover was the first baseball coach and a charter faculty member at Golden West College. Over a 21 year span he amassed over 400 victories and was inducted into the California Community College Hall of Fame. He and his wife Barbara were fixtures in the Golden West College athletics division until Fred passed away at the age of 81. Barbara and her family want to support and encourage student athletes in the baseball program with this scholarship.
Galles Family Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Dr. Carol J. Grimes, professor of chemistry, using funds from her Chemical Manufacturers Association Catalyst Award for excellence in teaching. Dr. Grimes created the scholarship in honor of her parents (Winifred and Harry Galles), whose belief in the importance of education motivated their three children to achieve academic success.
Garden Grove Hospital Guild Scholarship
The Guild is a volunteer support group for Garden Grove Hospital. The Garden Grove Hospital Guild provides scholarships to students pursuing a career in nursing
Gary L. Parsons Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in memory of Gary L. Parsons, a former GWC instructor, to support students enrolled in vocational education.
Gladys Lavoie Scholarship
To honor Gladys on her 75th birthday, GWC friends and family established the Gladys Lavoie Scholarship. Gladys is an alumna of Golden West College. She received her AA in Early Childhood Education while raising her own eight children and providing day care for four others. Gladys retired in 2009 after being a dedicated District employee since 1979. She touched the lives of her co-workers by her friendly, caring ways, which earned her the honor of Classified Employee of the Month in November, 2004, and Employee of the Year for 2004-2005.
Graphic Arts Faculty and Gerald Volpe Memorial Scholarship
The Gerald Volpe Memorial and Graphic Arts Faculty Scholarship is awarded to a student studying in the field of art. This award was established to enrich the educational path of students pursuing art as a major.
Grimes Family Scholarship
Carol “Dr. G” Grimes taught chemistry at GWC for 33 years prior to her retirement in 2010. She and her husband Ray are ardent supporters of the scholarship program at the college, seeking to help motivated students complete their college education.
GWC Foundation Scholarship
The Golden West College Foundation's mission is to promote and assist Golden West College by generating community support for scholarships, capital needs, and special projects to assure quality education to the community for lifelong learning and earning opportunities for the people and businesses in our service area.

This scholarship was established to support the education of Golden West College students.
GWC Umoja Community Scholarship
The GWC Umoja Community Scholarship was established to support student academic success, personal growthand the self-actualization of our Black/African American students and Ally's while they are attendance at Golden West College.
Harbor Beach Division 77 Scholarship Foundation of the California Retired Teachers Association Award
This scholarship is provided by the Harbor Beach Division 77 Scholarship Foundation of the California Retired Teachers Association, founded in 1993. The Foundation's purpose is to grant scholarships to students attending Golden West College who are pursuing a teaching career in the public schools of California.
Herman R. Tate Memorial Scholarship
Mr. Tate was a lifelong Orange County resident who started a three-car taxicab company in 1956 and steadily expanded it to become the Coast Yellow Cab Company covering nine cities. He will be remembered as a strong supporter of humanitarian causes.
Hornbuckle Family Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Coast Community College District Trustee Mary L. Hornbuckle in support of student success by providing financial assistance to help students with the general costs of attending college.
Huntington Beach Soroptimist Women’s Empowerment Scholarship
Soroptimist International of Huntington Beach is part of a global nonprofit whose mission is to improve the lives of women and girls by providing access to education and training they need to achieve economic empowerment. We believe that empowered women and girls are less likely to enter into or stay in an abusive relationship, become victims of human trafficking or live in poverty. We believe that empowered women and girls will become role models for their children and communities and will change the world for good. This scholarship was established to empower single, head of household women (with at least one dependent) who are enrolled in an undergraduate or training program to help them on their journeys to live their dreams.
Huntington Harbour Art Association Scholarship
The Huntington Harbour Art Association was organized in 1969 and encourages all residents of the harbor to join in their group. The purpose of this organization is members' education, pleasure, cultural development and participation in all forms of art.
Instructional Planning Team Scholarship
The Instructional Planning Team Scholarship was established by the Instructional Planning Team of Golden West College. The purpose is to grant scholarships to students pursuing a certificate of specialization or achievement, A.A. Degree, or who may be transferring to a higher education institution.
IT Management Peer Group Scholarship
The Information Technology (IT) Peer Management Group is collection of technology leaders that strive to share and learn for each other’s experience as they continue to master their craft in IT management. We are proud to award this scholarship to individuals in recognition of their outstanding academics achieved and to help inspire our future local leaders in this rewarding field IT.
Jack P. Lipton General Counsel Scholarship
Jack Lipton attended community college for two years prior to transferring to UCLA, and then he went on to earn a Master’s Degree, a Ph.D., and a law degree. He is appreciative of the wonderful and unique opportunities offered at GWC for students, particularly for those who will be transferring to a four-year institution.
James Jordan Nursing Student Scholarship
The James Jordan Nursing Student Scholarship was established in memory of James Jordan by his cousin Tom Swanson. This scholarship was created to give financial assistance to nursing students, providing them with the ability to succeed in their future career endeavors.
James Pierce Memorial Scholarship
Jim Pierce was a counselor at Golden West College and was committed to student success. His professional expertise in the field of engineering and technology helped a generation of students advance their careers. Betty, his wife, along with friends and colleagues established this scholarship for technology students.
Jane Odland Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established by the family of Jane Odland as a tribute to their incredible mother. Jane worked in education for over 20 years where she inspired both her children and her students to pursue their goals and enrich their lives through continuous education. Jane was a long time member of the GWC Patrons and AAUW. She loved the time she spent volunteering with the ESL program, the GWC Art Gallery and she participated in several fundraising activities through GWC and AAUW in support of education. Jane kept in contact with several of her students and followed their progress. This scholarship is intended to keep her spirit alive as our family helps to support additional students that we feel our mother would have also been proud of as they progress toward their goals and the American dream.
John and Sheila Wordes Scholarship
John Wordes is a charter faculty member of Golden West College and began his campus career as Fine and Applied Arts Division chairman. During his campus career, he has been the Associate Dean of Community Services, Dean of Fine and Performing Arts Division and Dean of Business and Information Systems Division. This scholarship was established upon his retirement, by his fellow colleagues for 30 years of service to the college. With his love of the Academic environment and Golden West College, he continued to work part-time for another twenty years, on Golden West College Foundation events: Commencement Ceremony, Scholarship and Awards Ceremony, GALA Fundraiser, Chefs 4 Scholarships. He retired after 50 years of service to GWC.
John Warner Hopkins, Ron Quigley/O’Neill Sportswear and Mary L. Wise Memorial Fine Arts Scholarship
This scholarship is a blend of the John Warner Hopkins, Ron Quigley/O’Neill Sportswear and Mary L. Wise Memorial Fine Arts Scholarship. June and John Hopkins established this scholarship for students studying for a career in art. Ron Quigley was a professional surfer and a full-time art student who excelled in various areas of the arts before his accidental death in 1986. Ron’s life was a unique expression of love and creativity, and the faculty at GWC enjoyed his multiple talents as an art student. The art scholarship was established by O’Neill Sportswear with whom Ron had a contract to provide creative artwork and clothing design. Mary Wise, a counselor for Fine Arts at GWC for many years, was instrumental in developing the college’s Commercial Music/Recording Arts Program. Named Outstanding Educator of America in 1974, she is fondly remembered by colleagues and friends for her total commitment to GWC. The scholarship is awarded to fine arts students.
Joseph W. & Valentina F. Pechulis Scholarship
This Scholarship is being established to send support to a hard working student who is struggling to pay as much of college costs out of his/her earnings as able, and is determined to succeed. It is hoped that the recipient will have a love for mathematics and will teach others of its value as an indispensable tool for bettering the lives of the world’s citizenry.

Judy and Ron Shenkman Scholarship
The Shenkman family has supported education for 40 years, formally beginning when Ron became a classroom teacher with the Los Angeles Unified School District. In the years following, he served in many positions, both elected and as a volunteer, to advance the quality of our local schools. Family members, including Judy, are past students at Golden West College. Ron and Judy are strong believers in the role of community college in the total education spectrum and are pleased to award this scholarship.

Kathryn M. Thurmond Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is given in memory of Kathryn M. Thurmond. Ms. Thurmond was a single parent, and a professional and dedicated businesswoman who acquired an accounting/income tax practice from her father and served her clientele for over 30 years. As past President of the Rio Hondo chapter of California Accountants, she demonstrated professionalism in business and the importance of continuing education. As a loving mother, she encouraged her children to set and achieve goals and reap the personal reward that comes from “a task worth doing is worth doing well.” In her spirit, this scholarship may provide the same encouragement, support, and reward to its recipient for perseverance and achievement while completing his or her educational goals.

The Kathy and Richard Nguyen Scholarship was established to support students pursuing higher education in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) related fields.
Katie Chen’s Foundation Scholarship
Katie Chen Foundation Scholarship was established for students , specifically single parents, who demonstrate a need for financial support. Mrs. Chen started her career path at GWC with the mindset that one day she will be able to give back to her community. She recognizes the importance and values of college education in younger generations and is committed to continuously support the disadvantaged with the necessary resources to assist with their educational goals.
Kearstyn Brammer Scholarship
Kearstyn Brammer was a passionate musician who loved sharing her gift with others. She died in a car accident before she could complete her degree. This award is to inspire others to follow her path in the arts.
Leah Fudim Memorial Scholarship
Alpha Gamma Sigma remembers and honors Leah for the beautiful life she lived. Leah was an active student on campus; she participated in ASGWC, AGS, Sustainability, Safety and Facilities Committee, choir, and the Interpreting program. Leah was a dedicated leader in the community and her church. She was passionate in a choir and with American Sign Language. She touched numerous lives with her many talents. This Endowed Scholarship was set up to be given to a deserving student that exemplifies her qualifies and preserves Leah’s memory and her good work that they are never be forgotten.

Linda Goar Wilson Excellence in Nursing
Linda G. Wilsons passion was nursing. In her role as professor of Nursing at GWC, she delighted in the ability to share her joy and teach the shill of nursing to future generations. This scholarship is established in her memory to perpeturate her love of teaching and to provide future students with the ability to learn and become an expert in the vocation she loved.
Lloyd Hamilton Campus Life Award
The Associated Students of GWC established this award in recognition of Lloyd Hamilton's contribution to campus life in assisting the Associated Students with their various projects. He was the founding Director of Business Services for the college. The award recognizes an outstanding student who has contributed to and also inspired the quality of campus life.
Lorraine Prinsky Social Science Scholarship
Dr. Lorraine Prinsky, a Coast Colleges Trustee and CSUF professor emeritus established this scholarship to aid continuing social science in their studies at GWC.
Marjorie Shane Memorial Scholarship
The Shane family has always been a strong supporter of education. This scholarship, in memory of Marjorie Shane, is to be granted to a student in either a career or transfer program. As a former student at Golden West College who went on to study at California State University Long Beach, Marjorie Shane knew that community college provides a solid step on the path to educational success. This scholarship honors Marjorie's memory and will continue her commitment to help student achieve their educational goals.
Mark Johnson, Homer Roughton and Bruce Williams Memorial English Scholarship
This scholarship is a blend of the Mark Johnson, Homer Roughton and Bruce Williams Memorial English Scholarships, and is given to a student who is an English Major. Mark Johnson was a courageous and talented young man who was a student at GWC and editor of the school newspaper, The Western Sun.
Mark’s family established this scholarship in his memory. The Homer Roughton scholarship was established by the Friends of the Seal Beach Library, as well as other friends and family members, in memory of June Hopkins’ husband, Homer. Bruce Williams was the Public Information Officer and Director of Community Services at GWC until his death in 1982.

Mildred Anderson Memorial Scholarship
After working in the retail industry as a buyer for several department stores, including Bloomingdales and Bullocks, Mil Anderson became a charter faculty member in the Business Division at Golden West College when it first opened its doors in 1966. Mil enjoyed sharing with students her marketing, salesmanship, and work experience, the tools they would need to succeed in the retail industry. Mil Anderson knew the importance of student success through education and made provisions in her estate to support business scholarships at Golden West College.

Nicholas G. Fosco Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Nick's family and friends to honor his memory after his untimely death at age 26. After completing his general education through Golden West College, he transferred to CSU, Chico where he had just completed his junior year as a Criminal Justice major. He had dreams of making a difference in people's lives through his work in the criminal justice field using customs/trafficking as a stepping stone to investigational work with the DEA/FBI. It is the family's desire that this scholarship serve as a stepping stone for a student enrolled in the Criminal Justice Training Program who also has dreams of making a difference in our world.
Noreen Yoshida-Peer Scholarship
Those who know Noreen and even those who have not met her, understand the influence and generous nature of this fine lady. A special concert was held to "Honor the Lady", designed to endow a scholarship in the name of a true friend who is fighting cancer. Noreen is an alumna of Golden West College. She has also worked at GWC for over 36 years and was named the very first Classified Employee of the Month when the program started back in March 1991. Her passion is to help others in any way she can and has received several awards from a variety of volunteer organizations for her volunteer work while working full time and pursuing her AA, BA and MA degrees.
Norma Nisco Memorial Nursing Scholarship
This scholarship is dedicated in honor of Norma, “Because of You,” by her loving husband and best friend, Philip, their children and families. In her mid-thirties and after raising her children, Norma pursued her vocation of a nursing career dedicated to the hands-on care and comfort of the sick and less fortunate.
Norma enjoyed the strong gift of spiritual faith, which perfected her angelic nursing career as she touched the lives of an entire community.
Norman Karkut Memorial Scholarship
Norman Karkut, a Seal Beach resident, taught in the Long Beach Unified School District for 37 years. Many of those years were spent teaching junior high math at various schools. The promoting and nourishing of math skills were his passion, and his family wishes to honor his memory with this scholarship.

The Patrons Cheryl Tittle Veterans Scholarship was established in November 2017 upon the retirement of long time Patrons and Golden West College employee, Cheryl Tittle. Cheryl’s upbringing in a military family helped her to develop the understanding of the needs of our Veterans. As such, in 2010 it was natural for Cheryl to take on the responsibility of overseeing the day to day support needed by students by becoming a “den mother” to the Golden West College student Veterans, helping them to become academically successful. Patrons Monarch Scholarship
Organized in April of 1973, the Golden West College Patrons raise funds annually for student scholarships. The Patrons is a college support group of over 100 members, which is comprised of alumni, community volunteers and Golden West College staff and faculty. In addition to fund raising, Patrons members have volunteered hundreds of hours each year in support of the Patrons Chefs for Scholarships, Fine Arts Gallery, Gala, Commencement, Scholarship and Awards Ceremony, and other special events.
Patrons Past Presidents Scholarship
The Golden West College Patrons established this scholarship in 2003 to honor the Past Presidents of Patrons for their service and support of education to Golden West College students.
Paul and June Cope Memorial Scholarship
Paul and June Cope were the deaf parents of retired GWC employees Paula Mucciaro and Laura Thate and the grandparents of former GWC employee Steve Mucciaro. Paul and June grew up in a time when higher education was not readily available to the deaf. However, education was very important to them. This scholarship has been set-up to help GWC deaf students continue their higher education.
Peggy Staggs Memorial Scholarship
Peggy Staggs taught U.S. History at Golden West College from its opening for over 20 years. After marrying and having four children, she went to college beginning when her youngest children were toddlers. She studied at Orange Coast College and CSU Fullerton, earning bachelors and masters degrees. She enjoyed teaching young adults, particularly those who returned to school after a gap in their education.
Profesóra Cronk Memorial Scholarship
This is the second scholarship dedicated in memory of Brunilda "Bruni" L. Cronk by her family and friends. Profesóra Cronk, as she was lovingly called by many of her students, exemplified what it meant to be a teacher and professor. She set the standard for all who seek to be the best they can be. Whether in one of her Spanish or Social Science classes, Bruni’s students looked forward to coming to class. Her door was always open. She counseled others based on the struggles she overcame. She would walk hand in hand with anyone struggling with an obstacle. Her memory will live on forever in the hearts of those she touched. We love you, Bruni.

R. Dudley Boyce and Mary T. Boyce Memorial Scholarship
R. Dudley Boyce, the founding president of Golden West College, was recognized nationally for his leadership and innovation. With the partnership of his wife, Mary Boyce Thornton Simpson, Dr. Boyce provided the motivation and leadership that created a campus legacy of innovation. They worked together to establish a new campus and nurture its growth. This scholarship was created as a tribute to Dr. R. Dudley and Mary Boyce by the Patrons of Golden West College, and their many friends, faculty and staff, who continue to carry on Dr. Boyce’s motto, “Let Change Be the Tradition.”

The GWC Student Council established this annual award in memory of Dr. Boyce to recognize a student who most exemplifies the quality of leadership. The candidates are nominated by faculty, staff and students, and the recipient is selected by a committee.
ReYCarr Mathematics Scholarship
ReYCarr Software was created in 1996 to provide the Golden West College developmental mathematics program with structured courses that promote self-discipline and mastery through practice. In 2007, ReYCarr Software established the ReYCarr Mathematics Scholarship to promote academic achievement in mathematics and science. With this scholarship, ReYCarr Software wishes to recognize and encourage selected Golden West College mathematics students at the calculus level and higher for their demonstrated academic excellence and potential for future contributions to society.
Rhonda Amber Gentry Memorial Scholarship
Rhonda Amber Gentry was a sincere, gifted artist. Her background in music and being a mother provided her with a unique perspective to see the world in a raw, poetic way. A sudden, traumatic death experience as a young teen went unprocessed and as a result, Rhonda lacked coping mechanisms to develop her life in a balanced manner. This scholarship is in the amount of funds she had at the time of her death and it goes to a student who has shown an interest in understanding Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and how processing trauma can help people like Rhonda return to their full capacity to live out a peaceful, fulfilling life.
Richard and Catherine Edmonson Business/Entrepreneur Scholarship
Catherine was an employee of Golden West College for 35 years. She retired after working in several different departments. She and husband, Richard, also owned a balloon decorating company here in Huntington Beach. This scholarship is for Business and entrepreneurial students looking towards a future in owning their own business.
Richard W. Edmonson, III Memorial Scholarship
Captain Richard “Rick” Edmonson (1977–2024) had a lifelong connection with Golden West College, beginning as a child at the GWC Child Care Center, then returning as a high school student taking evening classes, and later enrolling full-time while working as a student assistant in the Public Safety Department. After earning his Criminal Justice degree with honors from Cal State Fullerton, he continued his training at GWC’s Specialized Basic Investigators Academy.
Rick went on to build a distinguished career with the California Department of Insurance Fraud Division, advancing from student assistant to Captain. He also served on specialized law enforcement task forces and was a certified Range Master and Krav Maga instructor. Known for his dedication to public safety and training others, he was frequently called upon to teach across the state.
This scholarship honors Captain Edmonson’s lifelong commitment to learning, service, and leadership in law enforcement.
Robert J. Cassens Memorial Music Scholarship
This perpetual scholarship in memory and honor of Robert J. Cassens was established by his family and many friends. Bob was a devoted musician and bass player. His love for jazz, in particular big band jazz, led him to form the Orange County Rhythm Machine, a 16 piece jazz band in the late 1960’s. The band played for many years in local clubs and restaurants in the Huntington Beach area, Disneyland, and for two Presidents. Over the years, members of the band featured young musicians who developed their music skills and have become well-known figures in the music industry. One of those musicians was GWC faculty member and close friend, Tom Kubis, who joined the band himself as a gifted saxophone player when he was 19 years old. This scholarship is awarded to a deserving music student who wishes to pursue a career in the music industry, whether it is playing an instrument, composing, arranging, or some other aspect in the field of music.
Robert J. McCausland, Norman E. Rich, and Michael & Teresa Smith-Meighan Memorial Music Scholarship
This scholarship is a blend of the Robert J. McCausland, Norman E. Rich, and Michael & Teresa Smith- Meighan Memorial Scholarships, and is given to a worthy GWC student. Connie McCausland established this scholarship in memory of her husband, Robert. Norm was an Associate Dean at GWC, who taught advanced sciences and was instrumental in establishing a biological science laboratory, one of the most comprehensive in the community college system. The scholarship was established in Norm’s memory by his family and friends. Mike and Teri were a young married couple with unusual musical talent who were involved with various campus music activities. The couple was killed in an automobile accident in Iran where they had gone to teach for the summer of 1976. This scholarship for music students is a memorial to a couple that influenced so many people during their short lives.
Ron Quigley/O'Neill Sportswear Scholarship
Ron Quigley was a professional surfer and a full-time art student who excelled in various areas of the arts before his accidental death in 1986. Ron's life was a unique expression of love and creativity, and the faculty at GWC enjoyed his multiple talents as an art student. The art scholarship was established by O'Neill Sportswear with whom Ron had a contract to provide creative artwork and clothing design.
Roscoe E. Lancaster Memorial Scholarship
Roscoe Lancaster was a charter member of the Golden West College faculty, who helped build the Physical Science Department from the ground up. He guided the physical sciences group and was involved in building the respected department that it is today. In the early seventies, he joined the on-campus experiments with Audio-Tutorial instruction and converted the General Education Chemistry course to A-T mode. He taught this course through much of his career and was teaching it when he retired in January 2001. Upon his death in April 2002, his colleagues and friends established this scholarship to help some of the students to whom he dedicated his professional life.
Sherry Griswold Memorial Scholarship
Sherry Griswold was a young soldier killed in WWII during his second combat mission over Bleshamer, Germany, in 1944. Sherry was a person of high principles and standards: "To act as he would act, to measure by the same standards as he would use, and thereby further the expression of his life's goodness is the desire of the trustees of the Sherry Griswold Foundation in making this gift to Golden West College. It is hoped that Sherry's influence will always be effectively expanding his love of peace and goodwill to mankind."
Siracusa Family Scholarship
Sisti and Catherine Siracusa and their family of five children will long be remembered in Huntington Beach as honored and regular contributors to GWC. All five children attended community colleges and believe it played an important role in launching their careers. Bill, the youngest, established the scholarship in honor of his family and was a major supporter of the GWC scholarship program.

This scholarship was established by the Maxine V. Krape Trust.
Stacy Bryan Student Director Scholarship
This scholarship will encourage and enable student to pursue their passion for theater. It was established in memory of Stacy Bryan by her family and friends. Stacy loved her time at Golden West College; in particular, her participation in the Theater Arts program. The Arts provide the most provoking and entertaining expression of the human spirit, and we take pleasure in encouraging others to develop their directing talents.
Stephanie Dumont Counselor Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was created by Stephanie fellow counselors and individual who believe in the work that Stephanie was doing. Stephanie Dumont was a counselor at GWC who believed in supporting disadvantaged youth and has a strong interest in Elementary Education and Child Adolescent Development.
Stephanie Dumont Memorial International Student Scholarship
This scholarship was established in honor of Stephanie Dumont, a member of the GWC Counseling Faculty whose amazing spirit, compassion for students, and vision for education are woven into the fabric of this college. Among her countless contributions to our community, Stephanie was instrumental in establishing the International Student Program and served as the first Counselor for International Students. This scholarship is awarded to new international students who have demonstrated leadership and other qualities that Stephanie inspired among students: Passion, integrity, open-mindedness, empathy, equity, and inclusion.
Student in Engineering and Computer Science Scholarship
Recognizing the gender disparity and inequality in engineering and technology, this scholarship is established to assist and empower student to achieve their full potentials while pursuing these fields.

This scholarship was established by the GWC Bookstore and the Travel Club to aid students in expanding their horizons through travel.
Tennyson & Booth Nursing Scholarship
Gene Booth and Dagny Tennyson met at Golden West College and were married for 28 years. Gene worked for the Coast Community College District for over nine years. Dagny taught nursing for 27 years and then was a counselor for five years.
The Breonna Taylor Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is named after Breonna Taylor and serves as a memorial to commemorate her life and her dream of becoming a nurse. We give this scholarship annually to help support a students studying to become a nurse. In this way we honor Breonna's story. We will say Breonna Taylor's name, and in lieu of flowers, we will make space for other student like her.
The Daniel J. Corfield Memorial Scholarship
Professor Dan Corfield was a beloved colleague in the English Department and Writing Center for several years. Respected by students and faculty alike, Dan’s kind heart and creative spirit helped to make our college the welcoming institution that it is, and his legacy is one of class and selflessness. Dan loved to write , he wrote daily and his poems and short stories have been published. This scholarship-which will be awarded to a student dedicated to the art and craft of Creative Writing-seeks to ensure that the dignity and professionalism with which Dan carried himself will be carried forth in the years ahead.
The Edward H Cummings Family Endowment
This scholarship was established by Diana Cummings, her family and Ed Cummings' friends and colleagues in the local branch of AAUW. Mr. Cummings was a true gentleman and known for his integrity, wisdom and penchant for reading. Professionally Mr. Cummings was a local attorney and arbitrator. He enjoyed traveling the world, golfing and playing poker. Ed’s great sense of humor and positive attitude will be missed. This scholarship is to honor his memory and to perpetuate his high academic standards in the fields of pre-law or nursing.

Valerie Venegas Servant Leader Scholarship
Valerie Venegas served as the Student Activities Director for 22 years at Golden West College then moved to a different management role as the Scholarship and Event Coordinator for 11 years. In her over 33 years at the college, she was devoted to teaching students leadership skills. She valued the servant leadership as a quality that all effective leaders must possess when moving an organization forward. She ended her career receiving 6 ICC Advisor of the Year recognitions and two Advisor of the Year recognitions from AGS State Honor Society and was presented the Peace Studies Award. Her love for the students was her driving force in all she did.
Venner Farley Excellence in Nursing Scholarship
Dr. Farley served as Dean of Health Professions for ten years before her 1993 retirement. Known for her innovative ideas and a demand for excellence, Dr. Farley was highly respected by students, faculty and colleagues with national recognition as an educator.

Vida Greer-Martin “Life Is Good” Memorial Scholarship
Vida Greer-Martin was more than a friend to those who worked with her in the Student Activities Office; Vida was a friend to Golden West College; she was a mentor, a second mother, a moral compass, and a fellow student leader. Having served as a member of Student Council in 2001-2002 and 2003-2004, Vida offered her experience as a student leader to those following in her footsteps. The Associated Students of Golden West College established this scholarship in tribute to Vida following her sudden death on September 1, 2010. When asked how her day was going, Vida would always respond, “Life Is Good.”
Vida Greer-Martin Outstanding Student Writer Scholarship
Vida Greer-Martin was an exemplary woman; mother, mentor, scholar, poet. In many ways, Vida was a living representation of Golden West College’s values. As a student and campus employee, Vida’s
selflessness, leadership, determination, dignity, and bountiful spirit helped define our school as a site where people look out for one another, and where individuals from all walks of life can find an academic bridge to their futures. As was witnessed by the large number of assembled mourners at Vida’s on-campus memorial service, she left behind a legacy of academic excellence and community service that we here at Golden West would like to see carried on. This scholarship in Vida Greer-Martin’s name not only serves as a fitting tribute to one of Golden West College’s finest alumni, but would ensure that the record of intellectual and ethical commitment she left behind will serve as a standard for future Golden West College students to strive towards and uphold.
Vietnamese Catholic Student Association Scholarship
VCSA Scholarship is funded by the Vietnamese Catholic Student Association (VCSA), founded in 1998, a non-profit organization run by students from different colleges and guided by chaplains who are diocesan priests in the Diocese of Orange. The scholarship aims to recognize and support Vietnamese students who struggle to overcome social and financial obstacles in the pursuit of their education.

The Johnson Family (Ray, Erma, Rodney and Justin) were longtime residents of Huntington Beach and all three kids attended Junior College. Rodney and Stacee both attended GWC and played basketball. This scholarship is to allow others a means to continue their education.
Waltmar Foundation Scholarship
The Waltmar Foundation was established by the late Walter and Margaret Schmid with the goal of improving the lives of citizens throughout Orange County. With roots in Orange County since the arrival of its founder Walter Schmid in 1911, the Waltmar Foundation is proud to be able to continue the Schmid family’s long history of giving students an opportunity to succeed.
William Bumm Memorial Scholarship
William Bumm spent his childhood years in orphanages and left school in the ninth grade. He entered the Air Force and retired 27 years later as a full colonel. He never forgot his limited education. After retiring from the Air Force, he enrolled at GWC, went on to earn a Juris Doctorate in 1978 and practiced law until 1985. His many friends and family established the scholarship in Bill's memory. Joanne, Bill's wife, is a retired GWC employee.

Understanding our past and looking to the future, the Woman's Club of Huntington Beach sees a never ending need for nurses in our community. We wish in ensure that those who wish to pursue a career in nursing are able to do so.
Woman’s Club of Seal Beach Scholarship
Dedicated to the enrichment of civic, social, educational, and cultural life in the community, the club provides various scholarships for deserving students, with a preference for a Seal Beach resident.
