The Embedded Tutoring Program at GWC places tutors in specific classes to help increase student learning, success, and retention in those classes. Embedded tutors work in and/or outside the classroom under the instructors' guidance to help students understand course concepts and enhance student engagement.

EMBEDDED TUTORING PROGRAM INFORMATION

Embedded Tutor Job Description

Objectives of embedded tutors include the following:

Help students understand course content
Help students prepare for assignments and exams
Model problem-solving and support study skills development
Help students navigate the course (i.e. the Canvas course shell, syllabus, and course requirements)

Activities appropriate for embedded tutors include the following:

Assist students with in-class and lab activities
Provide individual and group tutoring
Lead review sessions and facilitate study groups
Facilitate online discussion boards
Outreach to students who have missed class or who may be struggling

Activities not appropriate for embedded tutors include the following:

Teaching new concepts not already covered in class by the instructor
Leading or being responsible for the class without the instructor present
Grading assignments or exams
Enforcing class management or discipline policies
Functioning as a TA or personal assistant to the instructor

Embedded Tutor Requirements for Employment

Embedded tutors are required to:

Complete the application and interview process with the ASC
Complete all onboarding requirements before attending training or doing any work
Establish a weekly work schedule by Thursday of the first week of class and adhere to it throughout the term
Clock in for all time worked
Submit a timesheet through MyGWC by the 10th of each month
Log student participation as instructed by the ASC
Attend all training provided by the ASC
Meet regularly with the Instructional Associate
Complete the observation process each semester

Work Hours

Maximum work hours will be determined based on the number of course units, as shown below:

Hours are maximums and ETs should only schedule hours necessary to meet the needs of the students.

The embedded tutoring assignment will conclude at the end of the class or when the maximum hours are depleted, whichever occurs first. Hours cannot be transferred to another class. Hours can be split between multiple embedded tutors.

Embedded Tutor Application Process

The Academic Success Center begins recruiting around the middle of each semester for embedded tutoring the following semester.
Talk with your instructors and ask them whether they are willing to provide you with a recommendation to be an embedded tutor.
Click here to complete the online application for the Spring 2025 semester. Please be sure to give thorough answers, as we will base our decision to offer an interview on your application.
Interviews will be offered based on the following:
- Applicant meets the eligibility requirements
- There is a need for the support the applicant can provide
- The quality of the application
