Understanding Police Response
Police are trained to respond to an active shooting incident by entering the building as soon as possible and proceeding to the area of the shooter(s). They will move quickly and directly if they can hear shots. If no shots are heard, then officers will begin a systematic room-by-room search of the building.
Officers are trained to eliminate the shooter(s) as soon as possible and will bypass individuals taking cover or those that are injured. Please attempt to remain calm and patient during this time to allow officers to address the threat.
Standard training for these incidents is to create a rescue team that will enter the building after the initial team has entered the building. The rescue team's responsibility is to create a safe location within the building to take community members to. This team is responsible for searching and rescuing injured parties and providing a safe avenue for evacuation.
To ensure your safety, follow all police orders as they attempt to handle the situation with your safety in mind.
